Meet Tokyo RV, a campervan rental company near Haneda

Tokyo RV Campers is a small rental company based in Ota, Tokyo, with easy access from Haneda Airport. Since 2018, the team has focused on helping travelers explore Japan with more freedom, more flexibility, and more personal support than they often find with larger operators.

We spoke with Tokyo RV about how the company started, what makes its service different, and the kinds of road trips its customers enjoy most across Japan.

Can you briefly introduce your company and tell us where you are based in Japan?

Tokyo RV Campers is a small business based in Ota, Tokyo, in a convenient location with easy access from Haneda Airport.

What inspired you to start a campervan rental company, and when did you start the business?

We started the business in 2018 with the goal of giving travelers more flexibility when exploring Japan. Because we are a small operation, we are able to provide more personal support to our customers.

What types of campervans do you offer, and which one would you recommend for someone renting a campervan in Japan for the first time?

We offer a wide range of campervans, from large models to standard and mid-sized options. For first-time renters, we recommend the large campervan “Camroad,” which provides a spacious and comfortable interior.

You offer many useful services such as emergency support, English GPS, and rental equipment. What other services or features do customers particularly appreciate, and what sets your company apart?

Many rental companies charge different rates depending on the season or day, while advertising a lower base price online. We do not add seasonal or day-based surcharges, so our rate stays the same all year round.

We also accommodate after-hours pickup for experienced or repeat guests, and after-hours return for all guests. Many customers rush to get back at a specific time to avoid late fees, which can create unnecessary stress and even lead to accidents. To reduce that pressure, we introduced a self-return system that allows guests to return the vehicle at any time before 21:00.

Our pricing is straightforward and customer-friendly, with unlimited mileage, no seasonal surcharges, and insurance included.

While insurance deductibles are similar to those of other companies, we discontinued the NOC (non-operational charge) because it was often difficult for overseas guests to understand.

Most importantly, we prioritize quick support in case of any issues. Our team monitors email at all hours to give customers peace of mind during their trip.

Do you mainly serve Japanese travelers or international visitors? For international travelers, which countries are most common among your customers?

We welcome Japanese travelers as well as international residents living in Japan, but at the moment most of our customers are international visitors. Many of them come from the United States, Canada, Australia, and various European countries.

How long do people usually rent a campervan for? What are some of the most popular destinations or road trips among your customers?

Most customers rent for 10 days or longer. Popular destinations include Mount Fuji and Kyoto. With a campervan, travelers can enjoy not only the destinations themselves but also the journey along the way. In our opinion, places like Wakayama and Nara are still underrated and make for very enjoyable trips.

Do you personally have a favorite place in Japan to explore by campervan, and why?

Campervans are perfect for a wide range of trips, from seaside camping to ski travel. However, what we especially recommend is experiencing Japan’s four distinct seasons.

Spring cherry blossoms, summer beaches, autumn foliage, and winter snow each offer a unique experience. A campervan allows you to discover the best places to enjoy these seasonal highlights at your own pace. There is no single favorite location for us; part of the fun is finding the place that captures your heart.

What is your best advice for travelers renting a campervan in Japan for the first time?

We encourage travelers to experience the freedom of exploring Japan without being tied to schedules or hotel bookings. A campervan offers a unique way to travel, and we highly recommend trying it at least once. At the same time, we always ask our customers to understand and respect the local rules in the areas they visit.

Do you have a memorable or funny story from a customer?

We once had two guests who wanted to explore museums around Japan. After learning which prefecture the owner was originally from, they later sent us a message and a photo from a local museum near the place where the owner grew up. More broadly, many of our guests send us kind comments and scenic photos from places they were able to enjoy in Japan that would have been difficult to reach by train alone.

What was the most unusual road trip someone did with your vans?

We have not had many especially unusual road trips beyond the one mentioned above, but many guests tell us how much they enjoy waking up to views of mountains, rivers, or lakes and watching the sunrise with a cup of coffee.

Each guest creates a different kind of journey, and in that sense every trip is unique. Along the way, they meet new people and discover new sides of Japan.

Have you seen any travel trends change since you started the business? Is the number of travellers growing over time?

During COVID, camping and campervan travel became much more popular in Japan. Since then, more businesses and facilities have appeared to support campervan travelers with places to park and rest.

We cover many of those overnight options in our guide to places to stay with a camper in Japan.

The number of travelers is increasing as Japan continues to welcome overseas visitors. At the same time, we always ask our guests to follow local rules and regulations and to respect the culture.

How easy is it to book a campervan with you, and how far in advance should people plan?

We use our inquiry form and email as the main way to handle reservations. We prefer to communicate with guests before their trip so we can answer questions and provide guidance when needed, helping them enjoy their time in Japan with more confidence.

We ask for reservations at least two days in advance, although some guests book several months ahead.

Which season would you recommend for people to do their adventure?

April to May is an ideal time weather-wise, as it is not too cold and the seasonal change brings a fresh way to enjoy Japan, especially with the cherry blossoms.

Are there any new services or expansions planned in the future that customers may be excited about?

One new business model we are exploring would allow both English- and Japanese-speaking users to book places to stay with their campervans.

We are also looking to expand through partnerships so we can offer pickup and drop-off locations in prefectures beyond Tokyo.

For travelers landing in Tokyo and looking for a simple way to start a road trip in Japan, Tokyo RV offers a practical and reassuring option. Clear pricing, English-friendly communication, flexible return options, and personal support can make a big difference for first-time campervan travelers.
