Privacy Policy

1. Who we are

This Privacy Policy describes how Camp in Japan ("we," "us," or "our") handles personal information when you use our website at campinjapan.com (the "Site"). For rules about Pro purchases and use of the Site, see our Terms of Service.

2. Information we collect

2.1 You provide directly

  • Account data: When you sign up or use certain features, we process information such as email address, username, and profile details you choose to add. Authentication may be provided by our service provider (for example Supabase).
  • Content you submit: Travel logs, forum posts, comments, photos, messages sent via contact forms, and similar content you post on the Site.

2.2 Automatically

  • Usage and device data: Our analytics and hosting partners may receive technical information such as IP address, browser type, approximate location derived from IP, pages viewed, and referring URLs. See Section 4.
  • Cookies and similar technologies: We and our partners may use cookies, local storage, or similar technologies for security, preferences, and analytics.

2.3 Payments (Pro)

Pro supporter payments are processed by Stripe. We do not store your full payment card numbers, CVV, or complete bank account details. Stripe processes that data under its own privacy policy. To operate Pro access and keep records, we may store limited payment-related metadata on our systems—for example a Stripe customer identifier, checkout session reference, amount paid, currency, and whether your account has Pro status.

3. How we use information

We use personal information to:

  • Provide, secure, and improve the Site and its features;
  • Create and manage accounts and authenticate users;
  • Enable Pro supporter benefits and verify eligibility;
  • Display and moderate user-generated content;
  • Respond to inquiries and support requests;
  • Comply with law, enforce our Terms, and protect rights and safety;
  • Understand aggregate usage through analytics (see below).

4. Analytics and third-party services

The Site may load analytics or measurement tools that process usage data on our behalf. Depending on configuration and your browser settings, these may include services such as Google Analytics, Plausible. Each provider has its own privacy policy and may be based outside your country. We encourage you to review their policies and use browser controls or extensions if you wish to limit tracking.

5. Sharing of information

We may share personal information with:

  • Service providers who host the Site, run databases, send email, process payments (Stripe), or provide analytics—only as needed for them to perform services for us;
  • Public areas of the Site when you post content that is visible to others (for example a public travel log or forum topic);
  • Authorities when required by law or to protect the safety and integrity of the Site and our users.

We do not sell your personal information in the conventional sense of selling lists of individuals to advertisers.

6. Retention

We keep information only as long as needed for the purposes above, unless a longer period is required by law. Account and content data may remain until you delete it or close your account, subject to backups and legal holds. Analytics data may be retained according to each provider's settings.

7. Security

We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect personal information. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure; we cannot guarantee absolute security.

8. Your rights and choices

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or export your personal data, or to object to or restrict certain processing. You can update some information in your account settings. For other requests, contact us via Contact. We will respond in line with applicable law.

Marketing emails, if any, will include a way to opt out where required by law.

9. International transfers

We and our service providers may process data in countries other than your own. Where required, we rely on appropriate safeguards (such as standard contractual clauses) or your consent.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the new version on this page and change the "Last updated" date. Material changes may be communicated through the Site or by email where appropriate.
