How to stay cool in summer?

Summer in Japan is synonym with matsuris (festivals), beach and river swimming. Summers can be intense, especially from June to September, and staying cool in a van isn’t just about comfort: it’s about rest, safety, and enjoying the journey.

The good news? With the right habits, locations, and simple gear choices, sleeping comfortably in a van during Japan’s summer is absolutely possible. Whether you’re parked near the ocean, high in the mountains, or at a roadside station, these tips will help you keep cool.

The itinerary

The biggest factor on keeping cool will be the location you chose for your trip. In summer it is better to avoid the cities and really hot regions. Opt for the japanes Alps, Hokkaido for better confort and see our recommendations for places to visit depending on the season.

In general:

  • Head for elevation: Mountain areas can be 5–10°C cooler than cities especially near rivers.
  • Coastal spots often benefit from sea breezes at night.
  • Avoid urban heat islands (asphalt, buildings, vending machines humming all night).

Manage your schedule

After chosing your itinerary, you can also adapt your daily schedule to keep refreshed. Here are a few tips:

  • Wake up early and get started before the sun hits
  • Make your visits during the morning and end of afternoon: you'll enjoy more fresh air and also amazing lights for your sightseeing and photography.
  • Drive during the hottest part of the day if possible so you can benefit from the car AC.

Chose your vehicle

Make sure the van you are renting has insect screens on the windows and a proper ventilation system like a Maxxfan.

During the day, try to park in the shadow and close the van curtains to avoid the inside to get heat from the sun.

Some rental companies offer vans with AC running on battery. It could be a good option if you really fear about the hotness.

Manage your body

Don't forget to stay hydrated and drink a lot of water during the day.

During the summer I try to avoid the onsen and prefer to bath in the ocean or the rivers. Japanese countryside villages often have a river pool openned during the summer. It's the best way to relax your body and get fresh. You cans till visit onsens to use the bathing facility to keep clean. During summer a lot of beaches have shower facilities too.

Japan have a lot of accessories to fight the hotness. You can find portable handheld fans, cooling sprays, neck cooling rings and cooling towels (often at 100-yen shops or convenience stores).
