Samurai Campers: The biggest camper vans fleet with more than 150 cars

Samurai Campers is a campervan rental company serving travelers who want to explore Japan with more freedom and comfort. With operations near Narita Airport, Osaka, and Fukuoka, and new expansion planned in Hokkaido, the company is focused mainly on international visitors looking for a smoother way to travel by road and adventure Japan for real.

We spoke with Samurai Campers about how the business started, what makes its service different, and the kinds of trips customers enjoy most.

Can you briefly introduce your company and tell us where you are based in Japan?

Samurai Campers is a premium campervan rental company based in Japan, with key operations near Narita Airport in the Tokyo area, Osaka, and Fukuoka. We will also be opening soon in Hokkaido. We focus on creating a seamless road-trip experience for travelers who want to explore Japan with comfort, independence, and flexibility.

What inspired you to start a campervan rental company, and when did you start the business?

The inspiration came from seeing a gap between Japan's incredible destinations and the limits of traditional travel styles. Japan is very well connected, but true exploration still requires flexibility. We created Samurai Campers to offer a more immersive way to travel, where transportation, accommodation, and the experience itself come together in one journey.

What types of campervans do you offer, and which one would you recommend for someone renting a campervan in Japan for the first time?

Our fleet includes a carefully selected range of campervans, from compact mini campers to spacious Hiace-based premium models.

For first-time travelers, we usually recommend our mid-size campervans. They offer a strong balance of comfort, drivability, and efficiency, which makes them a practical option for people who want an easy and enjoyable first campervan trip in Japan.

What do you think differentiates your company from others?

Our approach is centered on delivering a premium, low-stress experience designed especially for international guests.

We combine clear English communication, responsive customer support, and thoughtfully prepared vehicles so that each journey feels smooth from start to finish. Beyond the van itself, we try to offer guidance, flexibility, and a level of personal attention that improves the whole travel experience.

Do you mainly serve Japanese travelers or international visitors? For international travelers, which countries are most common among your customers?

Most of our customers are international visitors. We regularly welcome travelers from Europe, Australia, the United States, Canada, and Southeast Asia, many of whom are visiting Japan for the first time and want a more independent and immersive way to experience the country.

For Japanese customers, our business is a little different. In addition to rentals, we also customize vans and convert privately owned vehicles into campervans. Many Japanese customers already own a car, so instead of renting, they come to us for conversions or to buy a vehicle suited to campervan travel.

How long do people usually rent a campervan for? What are some of the most popular destinations or road trips among your customers?

Most guests rent for 5 to 10 days, although longer trips of two to three weeks are becoming more common.

Popular routes include:

  • Mount Fuji and the Fuji Five Lakes area
  • Hakone and the surrounding scenic regions
  • The Japanese Alps in Nagano
  • The coastal landscapes of the Izu Peninsula

These areas offer a strong mix of natural beauty, cultural interest, and memorable driving.

If you are still deciding where to go, our guide to the best seasons and locations to plan your trip is a useful place to start.

Do you personally have a favorite place in Japan to explore by campervan and why?

Lake Motosu near Mount Fuji is one of my personal favorites. It has a real sense of calm, beautiful sunrise views, and the kind of close connection to nature that captures the spirit of campervan travel in Japan.

What is your best advice for travelers renting a campervan in Japan for the first time?

Try to balance planning with spontaneity. It helps to map out a few key destinations, but one of the best parts of campervan travel is being able to adapt as you go and enjoy discoveries along the way.

It is also important to respect local rules, plan your overnight stops carefully, and leave enough time to enjoy the journey rather than rushing from place to place.

Do you have a memorable or funny story from a customer?

One customer called us late at night because they thought their campervan was not working properly. We were concerned at first, but after a few questions we realized they had never driven an automatic car before and did not know they needed to press the brake pedal to start the engine. Once we explained it, they laughed, and later told us it became one of their favorite memories from the trip.

What was the most unusual road trip someone did with your vans?

We once had a group of travelers start near Narita and drive all the way across Japan to Kyushu. What made the trip unusual was that they intentionally avoided the major tourist spots and focused only on small villages, local roads, and random places they found on the map. They told us it felt like discovering a side of Japan that most visitors never see.

Have you seen any travel trends change since you started the business? Is the number of travellers growing over time?

When we first started, many customers followed very structured plans with fixed routes, hotel bookings, and tight schedules. Now we see more people arriving with very loose itineraries, or even none at all. They want the freedom to follow good weather, local recommendations, or unexpected discoveries along the way.

The number of international travelers choosing campervans has also been growing steadily year by year.

How easy is it to book a campervan with you, and how far in advance should people plan?

We have seen customers book months in advance, but we have also had travelers book only a few days before arrival. In one case, a couple landed at Narita Airport, found our vans online, and booked on the same day. We had them on the road within a few hours.

That said, we usually recommend booking at least two to four weeks in advance, especially during busy travel periods.

Which season would you recommend for people to do their adventure?

Every season creates a different kind of trip. One customer traveled during winter and sent us photos of their campervan parked beside a frozen lake, which is not the image many people expect when they think of Japan. Another group came in autumn and followed the changing leaves across several regions.

Personally, I would recommend spring or autumn for the best overall balance of weather, scenery, and comfort.

Are there any new services or expansions planned in the future that customers may be excited about?

We are currently expanding quite quickly. New branches are planned in places such as Hokkaido and Okinawa, and we are continuing to upgrade our vehicles.

We have also started working on more curated experiences, so the service is not only about renting a van but also about helping customers plan interesting routes and discover places they might not otherwise find.

For travelers who want a more comfortable and flexible way to see Japan, Samurai Campers is aiming to provide a higher-touch rental experience, especially for overseas visitors. English-friendly support, multiple pickup regions, and a focus on smoother road trips can make a big difference for first-time campervan travelers.
