Just a 2‑hour drive from Tokyo, the Izu Peninsula was where I spent my first nights in a van in Japan. This video brings back a lot of memories for me. Izu Peninsula is a great area to visit for a weekend or a short week. It's better to avoid the hot summer there for sleeping in a car. While the winter is cold, you'll be able to enjoy the blue sky and amazing views of Mount Fuji. December to March are the months when Fuji‑san is best visible.
In this area I particularly enjoyed Mount Omuro, the countless small beaches, and the great seafood.
